AFYONKARAHİSAR
Afyonkarahisar’s history of settlement goes back over 7000 years. Because of its location in the most settled Central Anatolian Region since the prehistoric times, Afyonkarahisar has been a strategically important province that forms a passage way from the west and connects the Central Anatolia, Aegean, Marmara and Mediterranean Regions to each other. The name of Afyonkarahisar comes from the poppy plant (Afyon) which has been cultivated for around 2300 years in the area and the castle (Karahisar) which was built by Mursili II in 1344 BC during his Arzava expedition. In the historical times, Afyonkarahisar was dominated by civilizations such as Hittites, Phrygians, Helens, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans. Afyonkarahisar, where Grand Assault and Battle of the Commander in Chief took place, has an important place in the foundation of the Republic of Turkey.
Afyonkarahisar’s economy is based on agriculture, food, marble production and thermal tourism. Meat and meat-based food industry, the delight, the production of cream, poultry and eggs, cherry and poppy cultivation, marble quarrying and processing are the most important production fields in the province.
Afyonkarahisar is famous for its marbles, poppy plants, cherries, sausages, delights, local cuisine, handcrafts and hot thermal springs. Called as the capital of victory and thermal tourism, Afyonkarahisar is a meeting point of the main highways and described as a lock of Anatolia.
